A Translaminar Lumbar and Caudal Epidural procedure typically takes 5-15 minutes to complete and is used to alleviate lower back pain as well as radiating leg pain. Steroid medication is injected to reduce inflammation and swelling caused by various spinal conditions. To begin, a local anesthetic is applied to numb the skin and surrounding areas of the lower back.
Using fluoroscopic guidance, a needle is carefully inserted into the epidural space between the L4 and L5 vertebrae. Once in place, a mixture of steroid and anesthetic is injected into the epidural space, targeting the nerve roots to relieve pain and discomfort. In some cases, this procedure may need to be repeated up to three times for optimal pain relief.
