Cervical and Thoracic Transforaminal Epidurals

Living with chronic pain can deeply impact your quality of life, from your physical health to your mental well-being. Conditions like persistent neck or back pain can disrupt your daily routine, making it difficult to work, enjoy social time, or even take care of yourself and your loved ones. If left untreated, this cycle of pain can lead to increased stress, anxiety, and depression. Many people experience neck and back pain due to various causes, such as overuse, muscle tension, injury, nerve compression, or even degenerative conditions. Ignoring neck or back pain can worsen these issues over time, making early intervention key.

Benefits of Transforaminal Epidural Injections

Transforaminal epidural injections, such as those for cervical (neck) and thoracic (upper back) regions, are designed to relieve pain and improve mobility. For patients who haven’t found relief through other therapies, these injections can be an effective option, offering both temporary and potentially long-lasting benefits.

Key Benefits:

  • Reduces inflammation and swelling in the spinal nerve roots and surrounding tissues.
  • Decreases pain, tingling, numbness, and irritation, improving overall comfort.
  • Enhances your ability to perform daily activities, from work to social engagements.
  • May delay or even reduce the need for more invasive procedures.

How Cervical and Thoracic Transforaminal Epidurals Work

When it comes to addressing neck, shoulder, and back pain, there are many treatment options, and transforaminal epidural injections are among the most effective for certain types of pain. For cervical and thoracic transforaminal epidurals, the procedure follows a similar approach.

Here’s a step-by-step look at what you can expect during the procedure, so you’ll feel more comfortable and prepared:

  1. Positioning and Preparation: You will be asked to lie face down while the physician prepares for the procedure. They will sterilize the injection site and give you anesthesia to numb the area of your skin.
  2. Needle Insertion and Guidance: Using fluoroscopic (X-ray) guidance, the doctor inserts a specially curved needle into the targeted foraminal space near the affected nerve root.
  3. Confirmation with Contrast Dye: A contrast material is injected to confirm the correct needle placement.
  4. Injection of Medication: Once the needle is in the right spot, a mix of anesthesia and corticosteroids is injected to reduce inflammation and alleviate pain in the region.
  5. Post-Procedure Care: After the injection, the needle is removed, and a bandage is applied to the area.

During the procedure, some patients may feel mild discomfort or a slight tingling as the needle is inserted. A mild burning sensation might occur when the medication reaches the target area. After the procedure, you will spend a short time under observation in a recovery room. Though there are usually no significant side effects, patients are advised to avoid driving, heavy lifting, or strenuous activities for at least a day. Additionally, it’s recommended to skip hot baths or saunas for 2-3 days post-procedure.
