After a tough workout or strenuous activity, it’s normal to feel some muscle soreness or weakness. But if muscle soreness comes out of nowhere or lingers without a clear reason, it’s important not to ignore it. Instead, pay attention to when and how these symptoms arise. While it’s common for people to put off seeking medical advice, addressing unexplained muscle issues promptly is essential. Electromyography (EMG) and Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) are valuable tests that measure the electrical activity of muscles and nerves, helping identify potential problems. These tests are often performed together—EMG assesses the electrical signals in muscles at rest and in motion, while NCS evaluates how quickly and efficiently signals move through your nerves.
EMG and NCS help diagnose various muscle and nerve disorders. EMG measures how well muscles respond to nerve signals, and NCS detects possible nerve diseases or damage. If you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms, EMG and NCS could be essential steps in finding relief:
During an EMG test, you can choose to either sit or lie down in a comfortable position as the healthcare provider prepares the skin above the target muscle. Then a thin needle of the electrode is inserted in the skin into the muscle tetryaking a thin electrical current. The purpose of this test is to see the electrical activity in the muscle when at rest, and then again as you slowly begin to flex the muscle. This data is visible on a monitor and helps assess the functionality of the muscles.
During a nerve conduction study, electrodes are placed on the skin over the nerve and the muscle it controls. A small electrical pulse is sent through the nerve, measuring how quickly and effectively the signal reaches the muscle. This helps pinpoint any nerve-related issues affecting muscle response.
If you’re dealing with persistent muscle or nerve discomfort, Dr. Sonia Pasi at Advanced Pain Consultants in Raleigh can guide you through the EMG and NCS testing process to help uncover the source of your symptoms. Schedule an appointment today to start your path to relief and recovery.
