Occipital Nerve Injections are performed to reduce pain and inflammation around the occipital nerves. The procedure takes a few minutes and decreases pain from headaches, tension headaches, and migraine headaches.
Firstly, the skin and hair on the back of the head (where the occipital nerve is located) are cleaned with an antiseptic solution. After that, we inject the nerve with a local anesthetic and steroid mixture. There is mild pain from this injection, but most of the area is numb to reduce the pain from occurring. The steroid injection takes three to five days and has reportedly decreased pain for several days up to a few months.
