Bursitis is a common condition, and the olecranon is the most frequently affected of all the bursae in the body. Bursitis is a painful swelling of the bursa, which is a fluid-filled sac acting as a cushion to reduce friction between tissues of the body. The olecranon bursa is flat on the elbow's bony tip. However, if it is inflamed or irritated, more fluid accumulates, and bursitis will develop. It can be acute or chronic, and it is tricky to determine if it is septic or non-septic based on the physical examination.
Olecranon bursitis can occur due to many reasons, such as:
A hard blow can cause the bursa to produce excess fluid and swell.
If you lean on your elbow for extended periods on hard surfaces, it can likely cause the bursa to swell. This usually takes months to develop. Sometimes, the nature of work can also put people at risk of developing bursitis.
Certain activities can risk you developing bursitis, such as holding in a plank position for longer.
Any injury, insect bite, wound, etc., in which bacteria may get inside and cause the infection. This can produce more fluid; if untreated, it can turn into pus.
Sometimes, certain medical conditions can likely be associated with triggering it.
The healthcare provider may start by learning about the patient’s medical history, family history, signs, or symptoms, followed by physical examination and diagnosis. The healthcare provider will look at the redness or swelling around the elbow, assess the elbow movement and muscle strength, and perform a thorough elbow examination for any redness. Imaging tests like X-rays, MRI scans, ultrasound, blood tests, and fluid samples from the bursa are some ways to determine the condition and rule out other similar conditions.
